Sixth Grade Holy Person...
St. Francis (ca. 1181-1226) is the founder of the Franciscan Order and is the patron saint of animals and the environment. In his youth St. Francis of Assisi was renown for drinking and partying. After fighting in a battle between Assisi and Perugia, Francis was captured and imprisoned. He spent nearly a year in prison and, during this time, began receiving visions from God. After his release from prison, Francis heard the voice of Christ, who told him to repair the Church and live a life of poverty. So he abandoned his life of luxury and devoted his life to Christianity, and became known all over the Christian world. Later in life, Francis received a vision that left him with the stigmata of Christ—marks resembling the wounds Jesus Christ suffered when he was crucified—making Francis the first person to receive the holy wounds of the stigmata. His feast day is October 4.
Today...St. Francis of Assisi has had a lasting resonance, with millions of followers across the globe. Francis left behind not only a legend but a religious order, commonly known today as the Franciscans. The essence of Franciscan spirituality is living a life in the spirit of St. Francis, one committed to poverty and a relationship with Jesus Christ.
