Scripture: Fourth Grade
School Year Objective
Fourth Grade students will learn that there are different genres represented in Scripture and learn how to distinguish between them (i.e. difference between Myth vs. Gospel). They will focus extensively on Wisdom Literature, especially Psalms, as a specific kind of Biblical literature.
Getting Started
Give students an introduction to the different genres represented in the Bible. Students will spend the year learing about Wisdom literature of the Bible, a genre characterized by sayings of wisdom intended to teach about divinity and about virtue. Each month, you might choose to focus on one of the books from Wisdom literature. For example: The Book of Job in September, Psalms in October, Proverbs in Novemeber, Ecclesiastes in December, Song of Songs in January, Wisdom (also known as Wisdom of Solomon) in February and Sirach (also known as Ben Sira or Ecclesiasticus) in March. Throughout the year, have students do activities and projects that will help them gain a familiarity and appreciation for the diversity of emotions, songs, petitions and prayers reflected in Psalms.
